About the venue
Winchester Street Theatre is a Toronto performance space closely associated with Toronto Dance Theatre. Owned and operated by the Toronto Dance Foundation, it hosts dance activity ranging from performances to classes and open rehearsals. The venue connects audiences with contemporary movement and creative practice, providing a setting where finished productions and the process of making new work can both be experienced. The same venue can welcome guests to see finished choreography or encounter work in development through open rehearsals, connecting its public programme with the ongoing practice of contemporary dance.
Classes and open rehearsals place the process of making dance alongside finished public performances. That gives the theatre an identity connected with experimentation, practice and artistic exchange as well as presentation. For audiences, the venue can offer a close encounter with contemporary movement in a setting shaped by Toronto Dance Theatre's creative work, while its operation by the Toronto Dance Foundation connects the room with a wider commitment to dance space and activity.
